In the warren of sand-brown tents that make up Camp Bastion in southern Afghanistan's baking desert there is an iconic bright red British post box. The Ministry of Defence and Royal Mail have agreed to continue a free Christmas postal service for those on the frontline in areas such as Afghanistan until 07 December, the final guaranteed posting date for Christmas. Most of Britain's soldiers are based in Helmand, where Taliban insurgents are said to be teamed up with foreign fighters from Al-Qaeda and opium producers helping to finance the insurgency. Britain is set to have around 7,800 troops in Afghanistan by the end of the year -- the second-highest total after the United States to the United Nations-sanctioned, NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
